What Got You Here Won’t Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith

I was first introduced to this book by lurking another creative professional’s Instagram story.

Goldsmith has trained some of the world’s top executives to go even further in their performance. What worked for the individual to ascend the ranks won’t work for the manager.

This reminds me of the idea that top performers don’t necessarily make great teachers (although it’s a widely held assumption that if you’re good at X, then of course you can teach someone else to be good at X too…)

Some key takeaways:

  1. Get feedback from those around you. And act on it.
  2. Apologizing is a super-power.
  3. Employees / team-members are like free agents - there are always better options available.
  4. Oftentimes, money isn't the primary consideration for satisfaction.
